Firefighter Saves Kitten

WALT -  Explain thoughts, feelings and actions clearly

We wrote a recount from the perspective of the firefighter in the video. There was not a dry eye from the boys after watching the video.

Firefighter Saves Kitten by Caleb

We had put the fire out. I carried the fire blankets over to the door and dumped them there. I was going in to check for any one left behind in this wreck of a house. I walked through the door I saw debris everywhere, smoke was polluting the air. The air was so smokey I needed to turn on my helmet light. I could hear myself breathing deeply through my mask. I paced slowly through the lounge thinking to myself, what started this fire in the first place? The furniture was destroyed, cotton all over the floor.

I walked into a bedroom judging by the contents it must have been a kids room. I searched the room there was a spiderman table in the corner of the room and a skylander toy on the floor. I saw a familiar shape next to the toy, it was an unconscious cat. I tapped my buddy on the shoulder then pointed to the cat. Poor cat I thought as I carried it outside. I walked out the door and straight to the fire truck. I grabbed the breathing apparatus and my water bottle. I carefully placed the kitten on the ground and took my gloves off. I put the breathing mask over it’s face and poured some water onto my glove like a flannel and placed it on the kitten’s soft skin. It slowly became conscious, it started moving it’s paws. I took the breathing mask off the kitten. Then the kitten sprayed water all over me like a sprinkler. I picked up this small cute cat and put it in my arms to warm up.

I thought to myself this kitten was lucky if we hadn’t got to him soon enough the poor thing would have died.

Firefighter saves Kitten by Dineesh

As we patrolled around the block, dark smoke rose into the sky. “We’ve got a fire here in downtown city”. “Copy that” the other fire commander replied. There were sirens wailing in the distance. While we were waiting for the other fire trucks to arrive I went into the house to search for any people and to discover how the fire had started.

Ashes were falling, a dark smog layer covered the house. It was like someone had terrorised the building. Paper was scattered across the floor and the rug was hunched like a snail. With nothing further to do I searched through the bedrooms. I found some children’s  toys. My torch shone on the floor. I saw a cat but it looked like a statue. As I reached to grab it my hand sunk into its fur. I lifted the kitten and showed my partner. Before the cat could breath more of the smog I took it outside and connected it to the oxygen apparatus. After a few seconds the owner showed up and she was shocked. Her cat was in a critical position would it live or die?

As I got my drink bottle I laid a cloth over the cat, poured water on it and, the cat woke up from it’s deep sleep and wriggled itself to take all the water off it. “The cat’s alive” my partner exclaimed over the walkie talkie. “Thank you, oh thank you” the owner wailed.

Greyhounds Vs Toy Poodles

The Avengers read 'Charlie's Second Chance" by Phillippa Werry. They Then compared two breeds of dog Greyhounds and Toy poodles.

Are you thinking of getting a pet dog? You are probably wondering which breed of dog to choose. Two options for you could be a Toy Poodle or a Greyhound. There are many similarities and differences between these two breeds

Food and Water - Emily D
If you are planning to get a dog it is important to provide them water, different dogs need different bowls depending on their size. Such as Greyhounds they need a raised feeding bowl because they are tall dogs. On the other hand toy poodles don’t need a raised feeding bowl because the are small if it was high they of course would not be able to reach. So it is important to get the right size bowl for your dog.

Exercise - Samarah and Kristy
As you may know dogs need lots of exercise to get fit and be able to be fast. Greyhounds only need short walks because when they are born they are already very fast. Greyhounds also compete in races. A Greyhound needs only one or two walks a day. On the other hand Toy Poodles are an energetic breed which means they need lots of exercise. Toy poodles probably need 3-4 walks a day. For both breeds walks should only take half an hour to forty-five minutes.

Care and attention - Samarah, Kristy, Emily D, Joshua L, Michael and Ethan
If you want to have a dog you have to care about them. If you are wanting to have a greyhound, then you’ll have to give them a winter coat when it’s cold and a raincoat when it’s raining, because greyhounds have short fur and it doesn’t protect it from the cold. Toy poodles have lots of fur so they need grooming so it doesn't get scruffy.

Vet - Ethan and Samarah
Both types of breeds may need to get a vet visit. Greyhounds though don’t have many health issues so only see the vet when they are sick. Poodles sometimes get sick such as disk disease.  Greyhounds are less expensive to keep because they require fewer visits to the vet, which can be very expensive.

Pets - Ella
Both greyhounds and poodles can be kept as a pet. Poodles may look adorable but they may be a little skittish with children and may bark often, they also usually bark around strangers. On the other hand greyhounds are friendly around children and don’t usually bark around people. Overall I think that greyhounds will be more friendly around people and they won’t bark or bite much.

Conclusion
Overall we think that a greyhound would be the best dog to have as a pet. They are easy to look after and don’t need a lot of exercise and it is okay to stay home by itself.  On the other hand a toy poodle is a lot harder to maintain. So if you are planning to get a dog the best dog would be a greyhound.

Should Selfie Sticks be Banned?

The Justice League read 'Watch Out For Those Selfies, They Can Be Deadlier Than Sharks!' on DOGO News they then used information in the article to decide whether selfie sticks should be banned.

Selfies are responsible for causing hundreds of injuries and 12 deaths in 2015. Due to the rapid rise of injuries and fatalities many governments are now asking whether selfie sticks should be banned from museums, sports arenas and theme parks? Disney theme parks have prohibited their use and West Japan Railways banned the sticks both inside Japan's bullet trains as well as out on the railway platforms.

Reasons why selfie sticks should be banned include you may bump into a precious and expensive sculpture while trying to take a photo. Museums hold valuable artefacts and fossils that are very rare and would not be able to be replaced. If an item got destroyed due to a selfie stick the museum would miss out on money generated by that attraction.

Another reason why selfie sticks should be banned is that you could lose your balance and fall down stairs. On September 21st Hideto Ueda, a Japanese tourist tried to take a selfie on the stairs at the Taj Mahal, fell backwards and died.

As a fan at a sports arena it would be annoying to sit behind someone with a selfie stick. For example watching the All Blacks game would be ruined if your view was blocked by people taking selfies. Many people agree that All Black tickets are very expensive and hard to get.

Selfie sticks can not only be annoying but cause injuries too. Such as if you take a selfie stick on a ride at a theme park you could cause damage or injuries to people and or property.

On the other hand sometimes you need a selfie stick to get a better quality photo, also if you want a group photo of a special occasion. Some people argue that selfie sticks should not be banned but people should be encouraged to use their selfie stick responsibly.

Overall we believe selfie sticks should be banned from museums, sports arenas and theme parks. Selfie sticks have proved to be dangerous and even deadly.  People should enjoy the events and places they go without risking their lives to take a selfie. "Even a million 'likes' on social media are not worth your life and well-being."
