Flying the Flag

After reading 'Flying the Flag' by Trish Puharich the Avengers evaluated the claim that 'we should change our national flag'

Should we change our Flag?

In March New Zealand will hold a referendum (a chance for people to vote) to decide on whether to change our national flag. In Room 3 we are evenly split on whether we should change our flag.

People arguing against changing the flag say that the current flag is a part of our history. For example soldiers fought for New Zealand during World War 1 and 2 and fought under the flag. In addition we still have the British monarchy so it is important to have the Union Jack. The flag change  would cost a lot of money and the referendum is taking a lot of time and money too. People also argue that the new design is very similar to what we currently have.

On the other hand people wanting to change the flag say that as we are no longer part of the British Empire the Union Jack should go. Furthermore people confuse our flag with Australia’s meaning we lose some of our identity. Lots of people agree that the new design is better because it features the fern which represents our most successful sports team the All Blacks.

Overall this issue is hard to resolve without upsetting some people. Many people feel passionately about keeping the flag whilst others stand firmly against it.

What is your opinion? Should we change our flag?

  1. I agree with Michael that the flag holds a lot of historical significance and should stay as it is

  2. I agree that the flag should stay because people have died trying to safe New Zealand through the world wars and the flag has been through the wars. Kept up the good work room 3.
